The 2009/2010 sailing season will see some new faces in the ever popular International J24 Fleet in Tasmania.
There are now 11 boats in Tasmania. The latest edition to the fleet has been a purchase by several of the Hobart association members. The boat known at present as “Sailing Made Easy” was trailered down from Lake Macquarie, NSW, by class President Kaye Roberts and partner Stewart Geeves. The trailer for the delivery was generously loaned by class Treasurer/Secretary Peter Bingham. The association members banded together and did a weekend working bee and some tidying up and now the boat is for sale. She presents well as a good entry level boat.
The members of the association are a dedicated bunch of sailors who are hoping to increase the size of the fleet in Tasmania. They are very supportive to new owners as well as welcoming any new crews. The J24 are becoming a very popular boat for competitive class racing and social and sail training boat. It is idea for families, females and young sailors stepping up from dinghies or syndicate ownership. It is a very affordable competitive class boat. The class rules are strict and this keeps both older and newer boats on a level pegging. They are also a good class to progress on a State, National and International level. They are sailed in 27 countries with over 5200 boats being launched in the last 30 years and new boats continue to be built.
The association will be racing class events in both the RYCT and DSS Summer pennant series. The races will consist of a mixture of windward leeward courses as well as a long distance race. States Titles are scheduled for the last weekend in March 2010.
There will also be a couple of short course sprint series and hopefully sail training events. At this stage 3 Hobart crews may be travelling to Melbourne in January to compete in The National tiles to be held at the Sandringham Yacht Club. These crews are Streetcar, Peter Bingham, Divine madness, Craig Squires and Mrs.Pickles with Kaye Roberts and Stewart Geeves.
